Lifestyles of the NCC Adjunct & Famous A Mini-Series Part II by Colette Wassom Scott & Tobi Dummett-Leget

Years and years of education and experience are the theme of this Part II of the Lifestyles of the NCC Adjunct & Famous. These adjunct faculty bring an abundance of advanced college degrees and many accumulated years of experience to the NCC courses they teach.

Like most well-educated people, they also each have pursued additional fields of interest that, in some cases, are totally unrelated to their disciplines, but provide enrichment and peace to otherwise hectic lives.

Dr. Rick Brosseau was nominated for a Grammy Award in Hollywood in 1976 for his vocals on an album "Proud Earth", a Native American flavored album. Rick has since played and made volumes of music. He plays guitar, flute, keyboards, and does vocals on a series of CDs including Velvet Summer and Velvet Fire. Besides playing multiple instruments, Rick is also a composer, arranger, and producer of his music. He has just completed a composition of his original songs for a CD dedicated to the Iowa Great Lakes Area entitled Okoboji Dreams.

Rick is a retired Physician's Assistant and moved here from Flagstaff, Arizona. He practiced family medicine and emergency medicine in Utah and Arizona. He teaches anatomy & physiology lectures and labs for NCC. Rick loves teaching NCC students!

He lives at West Okoboji in Wahpeton with his fiancée, Susan. They plan to wed next August at Okoboji. Rick's CD's are available from him directly at Extension #189 or at rbrosseau@nwicc.edu

Stan Gaalswyk taught math and physics at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School for thirty-two years before coming to NCC in 2002. He teaches math, physics, and statistics for NCC as-well-as online statistics. Stan and his wife, Gert, live in Sibley where they raised their four sons and one daughter. Stan considers teaching physics a hobby because he finds it an interesting challenge to discover new ways of making students understand tough concepts.

Ten years ago, Stan challenged himself to learn to fly and got his pilot's license. He only recently sold his Cherokee 140 which he owned with two other people and hangered at the Sibley airport. He loves to fly, even for short trips because, he says, "Up there, you're in your own world." When Stan isn't scanning the skies for other aircraft, he can be found floating in a fishing boat on any area lake or stream. Stan's not fussy about his fishing and enjoys catching 'anything that will bite'!

Dr. Timothy I. McConnel is another one of our highly educated NCC adjunct faculty with a Ph. D. in Religious Studies from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tim's Master of Divinity is from Columbia Biblical Seminary in South Carolina and his B.A. is from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.

A temporary teaching position at Dordt College is what brought Dr. McConnel to northwest Iowa and Sioux Center, where he lives with his wife, Sheila, and their four daughters Charis, Alyssa, Kirsten, and Monica. Charis is a student here at NCC in Pre-Professional Education.

Tim's doctoral work was on historical Christian theology, especially focused on the twentieth century theologian, Cornelius Van Til. When Dr. McConnel isn't teaching World Religions here at NCC, he is a frequent lay preacher in area churches. He also works nights at Pella Corporation in Sioux Center.

Counselor, therapist, Mom, Grandma, wife, real estate investor, gear head, great cook, and CORNHUSKER are all titles used to describe Robin Harris. Mrs. Harris is a new NCC adjunct instructor teaching Marriage & the Family, General Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology.

Robin, and her husband, Bill, live in South Sioux City, Nebraska, where Robin owned a counseling and therapy business for twelve years. Bill runs C & J Body Shop in South Sioux City. Their four children, two boys, and two girls, are all grown. They have one grandson, Ashton.

Robin went to Phoenix University in Arizona, got her undergraduate degree in sociology and psychology from Briar Cliff University, and received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa.

If you know of any available real estate properties in the South Sioux City or surrounding areas that are fixer-uppers, be sure to let Mrs. Harris know about them. She loves to buy properties, have her crew 'revamp them', and then resell the property. She has been published in national trades magazines for her real estate investments and skills.

Lifetime Girl Scout Member Mrs. Cindy Talsma is also a new NCC adjunct faculty. Mrs. Talsma is teaching anatomy & physiology I lecture and lab, and teaches A& P online.

Her Girl Scout affiliation began with her two daughters, April & Amy, and their Girl Scout involvement. Cindy has participated in Girl Scouts at all levels by being a Leader of all age groups, a Neighborhood Chairperson, and a Trainer. In the three year period of 1987-1989, she visited the Georgia, Wyoming, and New York National Girl Scout Training Centers. She says she was drawn to the Girl Scouts because she sees it as a way to respond to needs with generosity and kindness.

Mrs. Talsma and her husband, Jim, live in Sheldon. Jim owns J.T. Trucking, Inc. and J.T. Auto & Truck Wash in Sheldon. Cindy and her two daughters are all three graduates of NCC! Mrs. Talsma continued her education at Briar Cliff for her B.S. in biology and M.A. in education.

Her additional interests include: tending to her two grandchildren; Devan & Madeline, crafting, mirror etching, cruising in her P.T. Cruiser, herbal cooking, and canning.
